India’s electric passenger vehicle market recorded 1,91,730 registrations between April and September 2026, according to VahanWarta’s supplied OEM-wise data. Tata Passenger Electric Mobility remained the market leader with 76,703 units, followed by Mahindra Electric Automobile at 43,930 units and JSW MG Motor India at 33,447 units.
But the headline number tells only part of the story. The more significant development is the widening competitive landscape: VinFast is building monthly volumes, Kia is gaining momentum, and Tesla’s registrations are rising from a small base.
September delivered the strongest monthly performance of the six-month period, with 36,763 registrations. The question now is whether the industry can sustain this momentum through the second half of FY2026–27.

H1 FY2026–27: OEM-wise EV Performance (April–September 2026)
Tata Commands 40% of the Market, but Competition Is Intensifying
Tata recorded 76,703 registrations during the first half, giving it approximately 40% of the market. Its monthly volume increased from 9,416 units in April to 15,120 in September, a rise of around 60.6%. This is a substantial lead, but Tata's position should not be confused with an uncontested market.
Mahindra and MG together registered 77,377 units, marginally exceeding Tata's cumulative volume. Combined with Tata, the three manufacturers accounted for approximately 80.4% of registrations.
The market remains concentrated, but the competitive pressure is increasingly coming from manufacturers with growing EV portfolios rather than solely from established leaders.
Mahindra's Lead Over MG Is Widening
Mahindra finished the six-month period with 43,930 registrations, ahead of MG's 33,447 units by 10,483 vehicles.
The monthly trend is particularly revealing. Mahindra recorded 6,103 registrations in April and 7,949 in September. MG, meanwhile, moved from 5,602 to 5,363 units over the same period, despite reaching 6,226 in June.
This does not mean MG's overall business is declining; the data covers registrations for the EV passenger vehicle segment represented in the table. However, it does show that Mahindra finished the period with a stronger monthly run rate.
The competitive question is no longer simply who ranks second. It is whether MG can close the gap as Mahindra sustains its higher volume.
VinFast and Kia Show the Strongest Momentum Among Emerging Challengers
VinFast registered 10,855 units during H1. Its monthly registrations climbed from 1,322 in April to 2,979 in September, an increase of approximately 125%.
Kia also recorded a notable improvement, rising from 419 registrations in April to 1,298 in September. That is more than three times its April volume.
These two manufacturers are worth watching for different reasons. VinFast has established a growing monthly volume, while Kia has accelerated from a smaller base.
Maruti Suzuki presents a contrasting picture. It accumulated 9,316 registrations, but its monthly figure fell from a June high of 2,009 to 1,131 in September.
The next few months will indicate whether Maruti can recover its earlier momentum and whether VinFast and Kia can maintain their September performance.
Tesla's Growth Is Notable, but Scale Remains Limited
Tesla recorded 645 registrations during the six-month period, including 295 in September—its highest monthly number in the supplied data.
The increase from 43 units in April to 295 in September is significant in percentage terms. However, Tesla still accounts for only around 0.3% of the cumulative market.
For now, Tesla's performance is better understood as an early-stage volume trend than evidence of a major shift in the overall market hierarchy.
BMW, with 2,448 registrations, remained ahead of Tesla in the cumulative table, while Mercedes-Benz recorded 1,018 units.
Registrations rose from 25,924 in April to 36,763 in September, an increase of approximately 41.8%.
The progression was not uninterrupted. August recorded a 6.5% month-on-month decline, before September rebounded by 13.4% to establish the period's highest monthly total.
The July–September quarter contributed 1,03,831 registrations, compared with 87,899 during April–June. This represents a sequential increase of approximately 18.1%.
The quarterly comparison suggests that the market entered the second quarter of FY2026–27 at a higher volume level. However, three months of data are not enough to establish whether this pace will persist.
VahanWarta Insight: The Next Battle Is for Sustainable Volume
Three developments stand out from the data.
- Leadership remains concentrated: Tata alone accounts for 40% of registrations, while the top three manufacturers together contribute approximately 80.4%.
- The challengers are not moving uniformly: VinFast and Kia are building momentum, Mahindra is strengthening its position against MG, and Maruti's monthly registrations have moderated from their June peak.
- Market expansion does not guarantee equal gains: Manufacturers must sustain registrations to translate product launches and portfolio expansion into meaningful market share.
For buyers, a broader competitive field can mean more choices. But registration numbers alone cannot establish which manufacturer offers better reliability, ownership costs, charging support or after-sales service. Those questions require separate evidence.
The second half of FY2026–27 will be important in determining whether September's record volume marks a sustained step-up for India's electric passenger vehicle market.
VahanWarta Verdict: Tata remains the benchmark for scale, Mahindra is strengthening its challenge, and the next phase of competition will depend on whether emerging players can convert monthly momentum into consistent registrations.
